For today’s Blogging 101 assignment, we’re invited to check out the latest Daily Prompt with intentions of building it up to fit our blog, and basically just personalize it! The prompt reads: Write a post in which the protagonists of two different books or movies meet for the first time. How do they react to each other? Do they get along?
First thought: Movies?! We can do it on movies?! Well, that’s just splendid. This is what I do on a regular basis. But then I begin to realize that there are so many wonderful, thought-provoking protagonists out there. One does not simply pick two, but after some deep thought, I’ve got my two people: Tom Hansen from 500 Days of Summer (2009), and Theodore Twombly from Her (2013). I chose these two characters because they have both loved and lost. Clearly with this in common, these two deep characters already share a bond of artistic ability. Tom writes for a greeting card company but wants to be an architect, while Theodore writes heartfelt letters for people who don’t know how to write their own letters. Pretty similar.
In another world, I see these two personalities getting along. It feels like Theodore could be Tom’s gentle, wise older brother. It’s a random pairing of characters, yes, but they are both hardcore hopeless romantics. They’ve known the fascination of love and the pain of goodbyes. They’ve been through some poetic heartbreak, so a reaction toward each other could only be of curious support. They have the charisma and patience to lift each other up when hard times arise. Heartache is rough on someone, especially a hopeless romantic! (I would know.) Talk about relationship problems. To sum it up: I love these two male characters. These are two very sincere, very passionate characters. I’ve always loved Joseph Gordon- Levitt and Joaquin Phoenix. And for some reason, I love torturing my heart with unhappy endings!
